Maharashtra chief minister skip May 28 vidarbha Kharif meeting :No Package or Programme to tackle Agrarian Crisis.

NAGPUR: May 29, 2010,

Maharashtra chief minister Ashok chavan intentionally skipped thee kharif crop planning meeting for the six districts of and Amaravati in Nagpur division held in the city on May 28 which was deferred earlier .Agriculture Minister Balasaheb Thorat who presided the important meeting failed to give any Govt. plan to promote Nabard and ICAR sponsored scheme for drought hit suicide prone districts of vidarbha .not a single member of parliament attended the very important kharif meting ,more over noeither expert or NGO were called for discussion and all officers were also not prepared to provide the solution on going agrarian crisis in the vidarbha region, Vidarbha Janandolan Samiti (VJAS) informed in a press note today.

“This shows complete apathy of maharashtra chief minister Ashok chavan toward the vidarbha agrarian crisis as this meeting was rescheduled so that the chief minister can attend it in the city and he can have in-depth discussion with all district collectors, ZP chiefs and chairmen of committees, elected representatives including MLAs and MPs and bank representatives on the issues related to availability of water, seeds, crop patterns, fertilizers and farm credit availability are sorted out but nothing has happened in the meeting as chief minister was not present in the meeting .the attitude of administration very gloomy towards the basic issues of west Vidarbha where six of the districts are facing farmers' suicide crisis. we were expecting special ICAR and NABARD plan to address food crop pattern and soil enrichment ,rainwater harvesting, micro social audit of water shade activities and promotion of special pluses zone for vidarbha ” said Vidarbha Jan Andolan Samiti president Kishore Tiwari.

"There is an urgent need to stop cultivation highly rain sensitive crops like suger cane and Bt.cotton in the crisis-ridden Vidarbha region and give special financial incentive take to pulses and foodgrain cultivation. Cotton cultivation is a capital intensive and aggressive way in which Bt cotton is being promoted could lead to a disastrous situation once again as it demands more water," Vidarbha Jan Andolan Samiti president Kishore Tiwari added..

"If the coming monsoon is deficient like last year, the situation in Vidarbha is bound to be aggravated. The principal secretary (agri) nansaheb patil earlier decleared that thia year maharashtra government is taking steps promote food crop and would like to discourage cash crops, but in khariff meeting nothing has been come up with alternatives more over it been even clear that there is not single village in Vidarbha has been selected for the intensive pulse and foodgrain promotion plan as announced in the Union budget by finance minister Pranab Mukherjee. Agriculture Minister Balasaheb Thorat also disappointed vidarbha farmers by keeping sailence over the fresh relief package of Rs 7500 crore sought by the state from the Centre for drought relief in 15,000 Vidarbha villages, this is also much more disturbing .if maharashtra Govt. failed to take corrective steps to address the on going agrarian crisis ,this apathy will the restart farm suicide spiral in near future " said Tiwari, urging maharashtra chief Minster to attend the agrarian crisis with out further delay.
